Our History

The Penn State Basketball Student Section was formed in 2003 under the name “Nittwits”. The section was highlighted by the distribution of dirt sheets – known as “40 Minutes” – where details of other players were published to enhance heckling and help students know the opposition. In 2007, the student section was rebranded to “Nittany Nation” where it became the length of the court in the Bryce Jordan Center. Nittany Nation continued the tradition of “40 Minutes” while becoming a staple part of Penn State Basketball. Highlighted by the 2009 NIT Championship, Nittany Nation brought 30 busses filled with students to Madison Square Garden where Penn State defeated Baylor in the final. Nittany Nation also traveled to the NCAA Tournament in 2011 to watch the Nittany Lions take on Temple. Prior to the 2015-2016 season, Nittany Nation rebranded to “Legion of Blue” due to the best incoming recruiting class in school history. Legion of Blue continues the longstanding tradition of “40 Minutes” while enhancing the in-arena atmosphere and growing the section as a club on campus.
